Sorry Shadow fans!Īll in all it’s great to see free updates arrive for the game and may be a sign of a successful release. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are pictured and likely going to be our playable characters for the update.

We can likely expect update 2 around June when Sonic turns 32! The final update, Update 3, seems to be the biggest of the bunch with new story and playable characters. Update 2 brings even more challenges, a new Koco (creature), and some event tied to Sonic’s birthday. Kicking off with a Juke Box, Photo Mode, and New Challenge Modes, Update 1 looks to bring some great content aimed at giving players more to do within the world whilst being able to hone in on the game’s music and visuals. The roadmap itself gives a pretty good rundown on the game’s plans for 2023. In our review, we said, “Sonic Frontiers is the best 3D Sonic game ever made, and a fantastic step in the right direction that bodes very well for the future of everybody’s favourite blue hedgehog.” However, there’s no denying that the game proved to be something special for many Sonic fans and a surprisingly successful adaptation to a more open-world format. Releasing near to the start of November, Frontiers proved to be a bit of a divisive release amongst consumers and critics. Announced via official channels, the Sonic Frontiers roadmap outlines a bunch of free updates including new playable characters and the addition of new story content. That being said, the fact that the reaction to Frontiers is mostly positive puts about half a cherry on a cake for adreneline junkies who want to control characters that run faster than any machine known to man.Riding high off the release of the recent Sonic Frontiers, it has been announced that the game will be getting further updates with the release of a new roadmap. Good alternatives to mainline Sonic games exist now, its not quite the same situation as it was during the Dark Age of Sonic where it being the only accessible franchise of its gameplay type meant that you had to play mediocre games to get your fixture of "gotta go fast". hopefully anyway.Īnd hey, if you're not too pleased about what you're hearing about Sonic Frontiers, perhaps you will like games like Spark 3, FP2 and the two fangames mentioned. With the review scores for Frontiers coming out it sounds like fans are still making better content than Sega and Sonic Team but the gap has significantly closed and the Triple A budget will show itself for the next title. The issue is that its not easy to compare all of these games as I suspect a majority of people in this Steam forum have not played any of the listed games or haven't played all of them at any rate. The likes of Sonic and the Falling Star, Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit, Spark the Electric Jester 3 and Freedom Planet 2 all released this year and all have been highly rated by those who have played it. That being said, this year has been an extremely strong year for Sonic fan content. The story mode and new playable characters need to live up to their hype, and smaller things such as Sonic Frontiers Photo Mode and potential Boss Rush mode need to be well worth the wait to keep.

But probably should be supported and Sega need to know that this is the direction the series should be going in the future, that way the next Sonic game when they've learned from what didn't quite work before can be one that's receiving high praise. I'm now convinced that this game is one worth waiting for a sale before getting. This is one of those games that I feel needs a demo in order for people to be able to determine if this is their thing or not.
