Players assume the role of Sergeant Matt Baker, a mild-mannered man from Missouri who never asked nor expected to be squadron leader. The plot of Brothers in Arms is loosely based on the real-life history of the 101st Airborne Paratroopers who landed in Normandy in 1944.

It also represents the evolution of the FPS beyond childish gun slinging to a more sophisticated model that embraces real-world environments and strategy - a big step forward that is long overdue.

Created by the renowned Gearbox Software (Halo, Half Life: Counter Strike) and published by Ubisoft, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a rich blend of action and tactics underscored by a captivating storyline based on true events. Seven years later, the genre has certainly progressed. But that was pretty well the extent of it: point, shoot, run if you were any good at Quake, the learning curve was zilch. It was good fun pulverising my school chums, and likely even more fun for them since I wasn't particularly adept at the game. I recalled piling into the Cyberland Cafe with a bunch of friends after school for a quick round of Day of Defeat. Other than that, the game is a fantastic WWII title! I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of the BIA titles. When I received word that I'd be reviewing a WWII shooter a while back, I must admit that my initial reaction was, well, a little underwhelming. That being said, Cover systems weren’t very common in 2005(If they existed at all!), So, that too can be overlooked in my opinion. Sure, you can crouch behind walls/barrels/logs/ravines, but there’s no Real cover system in place. Lastly, I would have loved to see a better cover system in this game. Thirdly, I didn’t care for default controls! They were clunky and just plain awkward! Thankfully the controls are all changeable in the options of the game, which will allow you to go with whatever controller scheme goes best for your playstyle. Secondly, I would have liked the game to me more cinematic! I’m a sucker for a good story in my games, and I love a good cinema scene! Thankfully the game DOES have a good story and some small cutscenes between each level that helps move the story along!

By today’s standards? Not so good! But back then? Aces! The first thing you are going to notice are that the graphics aren’t that great! But come on! It’s a 2005 game! Perspective man! For that era? The graphics were top notch! This same thing applies to the voice acting. However, similarities aside, it’s still very much its own game, and I think has proven it’s self to be one of the better WWII titles of that generation of games. So, yes! I enjoyed the game very much! Unfortunate though, the game is not perfect and does have some flaws! Well, maybe not “Flaws” but negatives that might put some gamers off! Not just in name, but it has a similar opening soundtrack, Similar titling colors.among other details.

You can tell that Gearbox was inspired by the popular HBO series Band of Brothers(Which came out 4 years before BIA). Why? Well, frankly I have enough trouble keeping myself alive without having to worry about different characters too. Now, normally I am not much of a fan of squad based games. Hairlessginger on Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill…īrothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a fun WWII Squad based FPS and the first title in a series of games that spans across different gaming platforms.
